Academic Research Article

After hours of thorough research and investigating. I have reflected upon my research, my initial secondary, and primary research has changed significantly throughout. This supports the idea that writing and research remains fluid and is capable of changing as ideas and findings develop.

Assignment - Primary Research: Distributing and Responding

One  of my observation plans are to look at the “HIPAA” signs posted in different offices. So far I have gone to 3 different doctor’s offices and 1/3 have the HIPAA patient rights posted. From what I have observed from the one sign I found at minute clinic, it gives in both English and Spanish readers clear details of what their patient rights are. Although the other two did not have signage, they did provide a few documents for us to sign for patient rights. I want to do an analysis on what I had observed from the different offices. My current aims are to go to a few more doctor’s offices/hospitals to see if they provide any signage so patients can view regarding HIPPA.

Assignment: M3 Research article

For my primary research, instead of analyzing data like HIPAA signage at CVS minute clinic and Orlando health. I have change my primary research to content analysis. This is because after doing a thorough and comprehensive analysis. I realized that public discourse was just not what I wanting for my research and so I leaned towards online discourse. While doing my primary research I found some pivotal information. I found that HIPAA perception online were divided due to the reason being that online discourse proved HIPAA to be ineffective. An example I provided was the fact that former Doctor Roxanne Gawe violated this law multiple times. She did  this by sharing content of her doing surgical procedures and livestreaming to her millions of followers. Gawe did get her licensed revoked. Also reviewing Dr.Mike and his content and comparing them both. The conclusion was that you have to look at both sides of things and that discourse had a good and bad side. It proves that although people like Dr.Gawe puts a bad reputation for content creating doctors, not all doctors are like her so we shouldn't assume anything we see.

Secondary research before and after

Assignment Eportfolio Out Come #5

My secondary research before was analyzing and defining Rhetorical strategies. I wanted to use intertextuality to explain what rhetorical devices were. For example, defining pathos, logos, and ethos. I wanted to see if HIPAA signs at different locations used this to appeal to their audience. I did look through a few signs and saw that the fonts were very small. The placement of the signs were in the corner somewhere. It made me question whether or not the signs were intended so that people don't look at them. But at the same time for legal purposes so they put those signs up.

Assignment: M3 Research article

For my actual secondary research, I had done the same for defining rhetorical devices, using sites like Purdue Owl. I did define pathos, logos, and ethos. Although those things are the same, instead of analyzing signs, I did analysis of articles and used it to back up my claims. I also included more sources about HIPAA. For example, I had sources about: "What is HIPAA?", "How does online discourse effect public perception on health". I also included an article about the punishments of violating HIPAA and what kind of regulations there are to protect patient data online. The outcome of the research was that there was indeed a lot of regulations and punishment, but some doctors oversee them because they are too focused on crowdworking the audience.

Conclusion

Based on my current research, it is shown that HIPAA regulations need to be updated to match with current technology and social media influence. Although there are many interventions and regulations to protect against Patient data leakage, many doctors still ignore the warning signs. They will proceed to violate these laws regardless of the warning signs to gain fame, money and power. A clear example of this is Doctor Gawe, who used unethical rhetorical appeals like posting her patient's surgery online without their knowledge, to gain views and profit off their pains and suffering. This raises the concern of whether or not doctors should continue posting on social media.

Although there are negative perceptions of online discourse regarding patient privacy. There are always two sides to every story. Not every content creating doctor is like Gawe. A great example of this is Doctor Mike who also does content creating. Making more than 900 videos but do it in a professional setting where his audience can enjoy the content without any HIPAA violations
